The Permission to Stop Searching for Answers Tonight

You have spent the day—and perhaps the last several months—searching. Searching for the reason you feel this way, searching for the solution to your problem, searching for the key to your future. This searching is a form of mental labor that uses immense amounts of energy. Tonight, you have permission to clock out.

The Exhaustion of the 'Why'

The question 'Why?' is a hungry one. It demands data, analysis, and history. When we are caught in the 'why,' our mind is constantly chewing on the past or scanning the future. This prevents the body from ever reaching a state of 'rest and digest.'

What if, just for tonight, there is no 'why'? What if things just are as they are? This isn't giving up; it’s putting down a heavy load so you can actually sleep.

The Peace of the 'What'

Instead of 'Why am I anxious?', try 'What does the anxiety feel like in my body right now?' Shifting from 'why' to 'what' moves you from the lab to the living room. It’s much easier to hold a sensation than it is to solve a mystery.

When we stop searching for the root cause, we can finally attend to the current effect. We can be kind to the heart that is racing, without needing to know exactly what started it.

This is normal.

It is normal to feel a bit of withdrawal when you stop searching for answers. Your mind is addicted to the hunt. You can notice that restless 'seeking' energy and gently redirect it to the feeling of your breath.

Clocking Out from the Existential Lab

You are not required to be your own full-time investigator. You are allowed to be a person who just exists. Tonight, the lab is closed. The folders are put away. The data is incomplete, and that is okay.

Give yourself the gift of an answer-free night. See what happens to your shoulders when you say: 'I don't need to figure this out before morning.' The world will still be there tomorrow, but your rest can start right now.
