Allowing Life to Be Unclear for a While

We are told to 'find our purpose' or 'get clear' on our goals. But there are seasons of life that are meant to be foggy. When we are between chapters, or when we are recovering from a loss, the air is thick with ambiguity. Trying to see through it only makes our eyes ache.

The Wisdom of the Fog

In a real fog, you can't see the horizon, but you can see the two feet in front of you. This is a profound spiritual instruction. When life is unclear, the only job is to manage the immediate space.

What is the one thing you need right now? A glass of water. A deep breath. To put on a sweater. When we focus on the small, clear things, the massive, unclear things stop being quite so loud.

The Trap of Forced Clarity

When we try to force clarity before it’s ready, we often make decisions based on panic rather than wisdom. We choose a path just because we can't stand the feeling of not knowing. But forced clarity is a brittle thing. It doesn't have the roots required to sustain us.

Allowing things to be unclear is an act of trust. It’s trusting that the pieces are moving behind the scenes, even if you can't see the final picture yet.

This is normal.

It is normal to feel anxious in the fog. We are visual creatures; we want to see where we are going. But we can learn to navigate by feel—by listening to the signals of our body rather than the maps of our mind.

Tolerating the Ambiguity

Can you allow the question to stay open tonight? Can you sleep even if you don't know the answer? This is the work of emotional maturity. It’s the ability to hold the tension of the 'not yet' without letting it alert you.

Tonight, let the fog be there. Let the future be a blur. You are here, in the small, warm circle of the present, and that is exactly where you are supposed to be.
